Proverbs 23:1-3

“Do not eat the bread of a man who is stingy; do not desire his delicacies, for he is like one who is inwardly calculating. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you. You will vomit up the morsels that you have eaten, and waste your pleasant words.” -Proverbs 23:6-8

I love how practical the Bible is. It doesn't read how we think a spiritual text would. It talks to us about how and who we should make loans to, the dangers of being a seductive person, the frustrations that a nagging wife will be, that if you have the money, you will be surrounded by people claiming to be your friend. It warns us not to spoil our kids. There is not an area of life that the Bible doesn't address.

In this passage, the writer gives us wisdom on how to navigate difficult dining situations.
In verses 1-3, it talks about eating with the rich, strong, and powerful. This might be your boss or someone wealthy or powerful. Then in verse 6-8, it talks about eating with someone who is stingy. When we are invited to dinner, we need to consider the position of our hearts. Are we seeking something from a meal? Are we likely to use the host for their food or the stuff they have? Being invited to dinner is a gift- let's make sure we approach it with humility and wisdom.
